KANSAS CITY, Mo. â David Colegrove seemed ready to have a happy and fulfilling retirement. After eight years as a St. Louis area police officer and another 22 years as a federal agent in Kansas City, Colegrove had set up his own business. But a few months after retiring as a law enforcement officer in September 2014, he took his own life. I think he carried a tremendous amount of stress and trauma that went unprocessed, Kim Colegrove, Davidâs widow, said. I definitely believe that the eight years in a patrol car did more damage than anything else in his life.
Police exploring alternatives to mental health calls

RANDOLPH Orange County officials are looking at better ways to address mental health crises through a focus on de-escalation tactics, peer support, and collaboration between police and mental health experts.
“There are many gaps in the mental health system of care,” Laurie Emerson, executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Vermont, said in an interview last week. “We’re creating a panel discussion in different communities…. how do we create more urgent mental health care opportunities?”
The most recent of those events was held virtually in Orange County Wednesday night, and included a short clip from the 2019 documentary

GUILFORD, CT Mental health workers aren t cops. And cops aren t mental health workers. But there s a place in the middle. Police can receive mental health training, and the two groups can work together to keep people safe.
It s the basis for the Emmy award-winning documentary, Ernie & Joe: Crisis Cops, produced and directed by Guilford filmmaker Jenifer McShane.

Dordt University Criminal Justice and Social Work Departments are hosting a mental health discussion, an HBO documentary screening, and an expert panel on Friday, February 19 at 7 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium and via Zoom. This event is designed to encourage conversations among social workers, counselors, law enforcement officers, and healthcare providers about the best models for approaching mental health crises.
