LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - On Wednesday, the governorâs latest order went into effect allowing any business to fully re-open and lifting the state-wide mask mandate.
âI think itâs been rough for everybody in the service industry. I donât know that people always know how hard the service industry was hit,â Ashley Driscoll, manager at Savage Tavern, said.
âLifting that, I canât explain how big a sigh of relief it is,â Loyd Turner, president of Orlandoâs and Caprock Cafe, said âI think weâre really on the other side of this right now,â he added.
Governor Abbott’s message to the state has left both Texans and the country sharply divided. But the state has seen a major decline in COVID cases and hospitalizations since the fall, including right here in Lubbock.
Local hospitals say so far, this recent cold weather blast hasn’t put a burden on their operations. In fact, hospitals say they have more space to handle victims related to cold weather events and other scenarios due to the decline of COVID-19 hospitalizations.

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Data from the Texas Department of State Health Services continues to show a rapid increase in the spread of coronavirus in Texas and
Lubbock hospitals seem to be no exception to that statewide trend. Executives with Covenant Health in Lubbock say holiday gatherings may be to blame for an increase in hospitalizations.
“About the time we said, ‘well maybe this is starting to go away,’ we had a sudden uptick today,” Dr. Craig Rhyne, chief medical officer Covenant, said.
