If you have taken your first COVID vaccine shot, you must be wondering what s the ideal waiting period before you take your second shot. There is still a lot of confusion over the interval between the first and second doses of COVID vaccine, Covishield. Earlier, it was said one had to wait for 28 days between the shots. But, now we hear that the interval period (gap) has been extended from four-six weeks to eight weeks. The second dose of Covaxin can be taken four to six weeks after the first dose. However, a delay beyond the eighth week may leave the beneficiary vulnerable.

New Delhi: People who are severely allergic to any ingredient of COVID-19 vaccine Covishield are advised not to take it, Serum Institute of India said.
According to the fact sheet for the vaccine recipient by the Serum Institute of India, one should not get the Covishield vaccine if the person had a severe allergic reaction after a previous dose of this vaccine.

The ministry has also prescribed that a person who has been given monoclonal antibodies or plasma therapy would need to wait 4 to 6 weeks before taking the jab.

Ahead of Covid vaccine roll out on January 16 (Saturday), the ministry of health and family welfare has prepared detailed guidelines on special precautions to be taken. The ministry has also circulated to the states a comparative fact sheet for both Covishield and Covaxin which includes physical specifications, dosage, cold chain storage requirements, contraindications and minor adverse event following immunization (AEFI).
