Protecting conditions for parents during childbirth
The health authorities in Portugal are highlighting the updated rules regarding childbirth in Portugal during the pandemic.
The DGS has reinforced the guidelines on pregnancy and childbirth so that hospitals ensure the necessary conditions for the father to be present at birth and that mothers with Covid-19 can breastfeed their child if they wish.
The guidelines on pregnancy and childbirth and care for newborns in the maternity ward of a hospital in the context of the pandemic Covid-19 were updated this week by the Directorate-General for Health (DGS). Regarding the recommendations for approaching a pregnant woman who is either suspected or confirmed in having Covid-19, as well as the criteria for ending isolation, the DGS update reinforces that “hospital units must ensure the necessary conditions, according to their Contingency Plan, for the presence of a companion during labour”.

I know that at the moment there probably isn’t a hotter topic than the Covid-19 vaccine and reading the comments on our website has shown me that there isn’t only a huge amount of controversy around this topic, but also a lot of misinformation.
Already typing these first few words of this opinion piece makes me wonder whether I should have just let it go and wrote about something that maybe is not so serious and won’t cause that much backlash. But where is the fun in that?

The rolling out of an ambitious vaccination plan in Portugal includes the vaccination of the over 60’s by June and for all those over 30 by August.
Those over the age of 60 years of age are to be vaccinated against Covid-19 by the beginning of June, according to the task force coordinator of the vaccination plan Henrique Gouveia e Melo.
“When we vaccinate the entire population over 60, in reality, we will - according to the death related data - be protecting 96.4 percent of the people who died as a result of this pandemic. Portugal has today recorded 34 deaths related to covid-19 and 394 new cases of infection with the new coronavirus, the lowest number of cases since September, according to the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) .
Today s values ??are similar to those recorded in October, with regard to deaths, when 33 deaths were reported on the 29th of that month and in September, with regard to new cases, with the registration of 388 cases on 8 September.
Regarding deaths, the number has been decreasing, having registered an amount equal to that of 29 October (33).
The DGS bulletin also reveals that 2,167 patients are hospitalised (two more than on Sunday), of which 469 are in intensive care, minus 15.
Portimão Arena Covid field hospital ‘about one third full’
It was set up about 10 days ago to relieve pressure on the region’s and other hospitals.
The Portimão Arena pavilion has been transformed into a field hospital to receive Covid-19 patients from all over Portugal. On Sunday afternoon it received four more patients from Setúbal. With a capacity for 100 patients, it is already around one third full, with 30 patients. The Portimão field hospital was set up by the civil protection in facilities belonging to Portimão council. It was set up about 10 days ago to relieve pressure on the region’s and other hospitals.
