Due to the onset of pandemic, the top court had taken a suo motu cognizance of the situation arising from difficulties that might be faced by the litigants across the country in filing cases within the limitation period and had passed the order
The Supreme Court has extended the period of limitation for filing appeals from courts or tribunals by litigants until further orders in view of the steep rise in COVID-19 cases across the country.

S.A. Bobde, on the occasion of his retirement as chief justice, said that he was leaving the court with mixed feelings. If this was a reference to the last hearing he held, many lawyers who followed its proceedings on both days also had mixed feelings about what transpired. Laypersons like me cannot say whether their dominant emotion was relief or apprehension.
NEW DELHI: Senior advocate Harish Salve on Friday recused himself from being amicus curiae in the Supreme Court s suo motu proceedings on shortage of oxygen and mismanagement by the Centre during the ongoing Covid-19 crisis.
Salve said that he will recuse himself in the matter relating to equitable distribution of oxygen, essential medicines, medical equipment and preparation of a national plan to fight the Covid pandemic.
As the Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde allowed Harish Salve to recuse from the case, Salve said that he wants to recuse because of the questions being raised over his friendship with the CJI.
Amid the rise in COVID-19 cases, the apex court has come out with two separate notifications. One of them said the benches, which used to assemble at 10.30 AM and 11 AM, would assemble one hour late from their scheduled time on Monday.
All judges would hear cases through video conferencing from their residences and in the meanwhile, entire court premises, including courtrooms, are being sanitized. The other notification suspended physical mentioning of cases for urgent hearing by advocates from Monday till further orders.
India hit a new coronavirus infection record with 1,68,912 new cases, the highest single-day rise so far, taking the total tally of cases to 1,35,27,717, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday.
