West Bengal on Wednesday reported its first Omicron case after a seven-year-old boy, resident of Murshidabad district, tested positive for the new coronavirus variant, a senior official of the health department said.
West Bengal has been witnessing a surge in COVID cases since the first week of April, amid the eight-phase assembly elections and high-octane campaigning by political parties.

Kolkata: One of Bengal’s most celebrated present-day poets, Shankha Ghosh passed away on the morning of Wednesday, April 21. He was 89.
Ghosh had tested positive for COVID-19 on April 14 and had been in isolation at his residence since. He suffered from several ailments. A few months ago, he had been hospitalised for a few days.
Ghosh was born as ‘Chittopriyo Ghosh’ on February 6, 1932, at Chandpur in present-day Bangladesh.
His work reflected the syncretic literary spirit of Bengali poetic history and spoke of Rabindranath Tagore’s influence to a great extent. He is known especially for his poetry volumes,
