The Supreme Court refused to entertain a plea by the NIA to quash a second criminal complaint into the 2013 Maoist attack on Congress leaders, which has alleged that there was a political conspiracy behind the attack.
The Court said that if the police argument that "damaging" India’s honour and dignity would amount to a terrorist is accepted, it would literally amount to penalising any criticism of the government.
The Court said that while encroaching slum dwellers make such demands, no relief was available to salaried persons in the city even if they too had financial burdens. "Nobody gives them a free house," the Court said.
The Court remarked that the preservation of public parks was necessary and that an authority like MCD cannot lose possession of them. “We are not living in a country where there is no rule of law," the Court added.
It is not necessary to have a special background or influential contacts and briefs to have a successful career as a lawyer, Supreme Court judge Justice Surya Kant observed recently.
