But first we have to start with the allout war brewing over her reblame it because you may remember that when Justice Antonin Scalia died nine months before the 2016 election and president obama tried to replace him with merrick garland, Mitch Mcconnell and the g. O. P. Blocked it, and their reasoning was a Supreme Court vacancy so close to an election should be held for the next president so that the people can decide. Well, you might want to s. A. T. The hearing will come back to order. Senator klobuchar. Klobuchar thank you very much, mr. Chairman. Hello, judge. I want to start out again by reminding our friends at home, people at home, that this isnt normal, we shouldnt be here right now. We are in the middle of a pandemic and people are sick. We are in the middle of an election and people are voting. And here we are, stuck in a nomination hearing. I know what my constituents care about, what they have been calling and writing me about. Constitution . First of all, i think that its improper to even be considering a nominee right now when we are in the middle of an election. Not just an election year, the election is happening right now with half a million ballots already cast in early voting states. Aside, i thinkt theres a real legitimacy question when you have the public voting right now for the president and the senate, the folks thatof the deal with nomination and confirmation of a Supreme Court justice, and if there is a lack of public space in the way that process works, there is going to be a crisis of legitimacy for ae Supreme Court it relies on really public believe in its legitimacy in order for its ruling to be voluntarily and sometimes for grudgingly, but still happily followed. Guest it gives me great concern
