Steering Committee recommends against formation of independent airport authority

(Juno Ogle Photo) Copyright © 2021 Roswell Daily Record Seven months after its inception, the Airport Authority Steering Committee recommended against the formation of an independent governing authority that would take ownership and management of the Roswell Air Center. The committee instead recommended the city partner with Chaves County in the Air Center’s management. The recommendation comes just a little over two years after Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed into law House Bill 227, introduced into the House of Representatives and the Senate by legislators representing Roswell.

County approves sale of downtown office space - Roswell Daily Record

Office space on North Main Street that had been used by the New Mexico Energy Library Inc. for about 10 years will be sold by Chaves County. The 5,247-square-foot building has a street address of 318 N. Main St. and is located among downtown retail stores between West Third and West Fourth streets. It has been appraised at $185,000, according to County Manager Bill Williams, and the county agreed to sell it for that amount following a 5-0 vote of county commissioners during their Thursday meeting. The sale is expected to close within 60 days and is subject to the approval of the New Mexico Board of Finance, according to a draft purchase and sale agreement provided to the public by the county.

Copyright © 2021 Roswell Daily Record The Chaves County Board of Commissioners is planning a special meeting Thursday to hear from a state epidemiologist and to consider a resolution opposing state House Bill 4, the proposed New Mexico Civil Rights Act. The meeting has been scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Chaves County Administrative Center, 1 St. Mary’s Place. County management has said that social distancing and face coverings will be required if people attend in person and that meetings during the pandemic also will be livestreamed on the county’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ChavesCountyNM. The meeting is expected to include a presentation by Dr. Daniel Sosin, a medical epidemiologist with the emerging infections program of the New Mexico Department of Health.

County to provide more relief funding for small businesses

Copyright © 2021 Roswell Daily Record A second round of business relief funding for Chaves County small businesses outside the Roswell city limits is due to be dispersed starting Monday. Interim County Manager Bill Williams said that $153,016 in grants to nine businesses in Dexter, Hagerman, Lake Arthur and unincorporated areas of the county have been awarded to cover COVID-19 related expenses and costs incurred from July 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021. “We had more requests monetarily that we had funds to go out, so we had to reduce everything to 44%,” he said. Williams said he personally visited small businesses in the county to encourage them to apply if they met the criteria.

The group voted unanimously, 5-0, Thursday during its regular monthly meeting for a resolution in favor of state meat inspections as a supplement to the federal meat inspection process. Commissioner Jeff Bilberry, the vice president of a ranching corporation, said he thinks such a program could help not only beef producers but also those who raise hogs and lambs. He said it also could help the smaller meat packing companies in the state that don’t have access to federal inspectors.
