of his teeth. and coming back to vote again because there has not yet been a speaker of the house elected. and it s all right now seemingly about buying time for more negotiations behind closed doors. so the fact the motion to adjourn even passed, well, that s a little bit of good news for kevin mccarthy. he did speak to manu raju just a little while ago saying he still believes that he will become the next speaker of the house, but he wouldn t commit to when that would actually take place or even getting it wrapped up by tomorrow. wrap it up tomorrow? no, no, i m not putting any time line on it. i think we ve got members talking. i think we ve got a little movement so we ll see. we ll have more from manu raju in just a moment. kevin mccarthy has suffered what many are calling five humiliating defeats. well, that was just today, and you can add that to what s happened in the past over the past several days. his own party has told him, nope. that comes of course from con
defaults and what ought to be. now, politicians always compromise and they ll always do it all to be, that s how struggling in this country. we had a civil rights act was 60 for so many compromises, we have to come back and try to have a 65. we have to look at law meters at this differently, and raises for the country. republicans started out far worse, they wanted to cut everything when they use the debt ceiling to hold the nation hostage. the other democratic president goes and tries to do the best he can, they come out with this deal. we still have to look, it s not about criticizing biden or criticizing mccarthy, it s about saying look at where we are look at the moral deficit that we re in. there is an argument in the united states congress that s the way to save the world s economy and the united states economy is to cut food stamps for peopleed it and work requirements and add more money to the military.
little more time than had been thought, time is running really short. this is still crunch time. and the negotiators are not indicating that the pressure is on. we ve talked for months about the consequences if there is a default, right? we ve gone through the list, i think most people know, but if there is a deal in place, and it s going through the legislative process, at the time when the country defaults, are those consequences as dire if the markets know, if, you know, if our debtors know, that the money is coming, we re just working through getting it to the president s desk? yes, so i think one of the things that is tricky here is that it is hard to tell exactly what the reactions will be, exactly what the economic consequences could look like, you know, in any situation, you re kind of flirting with those consequences, and so, you know, i think treasury secretary janet yellen has really warned of some dire consequences and
that s not how we should think. i m for forgiveness. about the debt ceiling, we see mccarthy out there and other people from the freedom caucus. we have not seen that much from the president or the cabinet secretaries. do you think they are doing enough to sell their arguments, sell their side of the case? i think the president has done a lot. i do think the president should use his bully pulpit to really call out these republicans and tell the nation what s going on in the oval office or in the rose garden, primetime address and tell the american people. they have manufactured a bomb, this debt ceiling crisis, and they are saying, unless you allow us to pass massive cuts to working class families, guess what, we re going to hit the trigger. in fact, there are many members of the gop caucus who are maybe kind of interested in hitting the trigger. maybe they are curious to see what happens if our country defaults. what we know to be true is that working families will suffer. people
