West Springfield OKs hiring diversity coordinator Updated Mar 12, 2021; WEST SPRINGFIELD A more inclusive hiring system in town government will start with a new hire this month, Mayor William Reichelt said. The town is collecting applications for a full-time diversity, equity and inclusion coordinator, a new position approved by the Town Council on March 1. Reichelt said the coordinator’s main duty will be actively seeking to hire and retain minority workers. During debate last month over Reichelt’s executive order condemning systemic racism, some town councilors had criticized the mayor for his own hiring record. Although West Springfield has a large minority and immigrant population, the municipal departments that report to the mayor are largely staffed by white people. In fiscal 2019, for example, out of 30 new hires, only one was nonwhite.
