Cherokee Nation s $1 8B rescue plan gets green light | News

TAHLEQUAH – Cherokee Nation leaders passed a resolution May 27 detailing how the tribe plans to spend $1.8 billion in federal COVID-19 recovery funds. The proposal includes direct payments of $2,000 for all 392,832 tribal citizens. “This is such an exciting opportunity for us as Cherokee people to have this amount of money to invest in our people and our future at the same time,” Tribal Councilor Keith Austin said. “This is a guideline that we’re aiming at, but these are the places we want to make a difference. We have the opportunity to not only get people on their feet, but keep them on their feet.”

HACN gets bids for 32 home construction units

TAHLEQUAH – In the May 17 Community Services meeting, the Tribal Council learned that the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation’s new construction program is continuing, and that citizens can now buy headstones for new burials through the tribe. HACN Interim Executive Director Jerri Killer said the new construction homeownership program has received bids for new units.  “I have 32 new construction units, the bids have just come back and we’re getting ready to award those bids. So we should be starting on those pretty soon,” Killer said. Tribal Councilor Daryl Legg asked Killer prices of material for construction since prices have risen.
