Killeen council nominates Clark for District 3 seat

Following a closed meeting Monday, the council unanimously approved the nomination of former Killeen City Councilman Terry Clark to the District 3 council seat. Clark’s name was put in nomination by Councilman Ken Wilkerson. Also under consideration were former Councilman Jared Foster and Nina Cobb, a candidate in the May 1 council race. Mayor Jose Segarra said that the decision to nominate Clark, in addition to his being “the most impressive” nominee, also stems largely from the council’s original intent not to nominate someone on the May ballot for the council seat. This represented the deciding factor. Clark served on the Killeen City Council from 2011 to 2015.

Killeen Councilman, Vietnam vet Jim Kilpatrick dies after battling COVID-19

Killeen City Councilmember Jim Kilpatrick has died after being hospitalized with COVID-19, the city announced Wednesday. Kilpatrick, who earned the Silver Star while serving with the Army in Vietnam, was 74. Kilpatrick, who died Tuesday, “was elected to represent District 3 on Killeen City Council May 9, 2015 and reelected in 2017 and 2019. He served as Mayor Pro Tem from 2017 to 2019,” according to a news release from the city. Prior to joining City Council, he served on Killeen Planning and Zoning Commission from 1996 to 2003. “Mayor Jose Segarra has ordered the City of Killeen Flag to half-staff immediately in honor of Councilman Kilpatrick and his service. Flags will remain at half-staff until the day following interment. Funeral arrangements are pending,” according to the release.

In the wake of Tuesday’s death of Killeen City Councilmember Jim Kilpatrick, local officials took the time to share their thoughts. “It is a sad day,” said John Crutchfield, president of the Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce. “Jim’s dedication to his family, the U.S. Army and this community was remarkable. His suffering has ended. I pray for him and his family.” Kilpatrick’s death after battling COVID-19 was announced Wednesday morning by the city.
