The Killeen City Council discussed a possible contract with an Austin law firm to provide redistricting services during a workshop meeting Tuesday.
Council members heard a presentation from City Manager Kent Cagle regarding an Interlocal Cooperation contract with Bickerstaff Heath Delgado Acosta, a law firm in Austin. Itâs estimated to cost the city $27,190, should officials agree to sign.
A vote on the resolution was postponed last week so that some council members could gain a better understanding of why the services were needed before moving forward.
Bickerstaff would determine if Killeenâs voting districts are unbalanced during an initial assessment. If it is determined the districts need to be redrawn, the law firm will work with the city to determine a redistricting process to redraw the lines so they are in compliance with the law.
The Killeen City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously against a resolution that would have allowed the city to fly the Juneteenth flag at City Hall June 18-20.
The NAACP-Killeen Branch spoke out against the resolution during citizens comments, expressing concerns that it would open Pandoraâs box and allow other flags to be flown at City Hall as well.
âFlying the Juneteenth flag would make it where other groups and organizations could make the same request of their flags to be flown. And yes, Iâm even talking about the Confederate flag or the LGBTQ flag,â Samuel Powell said during citizensâ comments on Tuesday. Powell made the comments on behalf of NAACP-Killeen Branch President TaNeika Driver-Moultrie.
