McNamara has served on the council since he was appointed in March 2016. He assumed the seat that was occupied by his husband, Tracy Hermann. Hermann died suddenly of a heart attack on March 3 that year at the age of 52. McNamara, a Democrat, was then elected unopposed in a special election in November 2016, and was reelected by in 2017 and 2019 without a Republican challenger.

Which is why administration has contracted with Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress to create a housing assessment study and better understand how the housing market may change.
The study will provide the city with the thousand-foot-view it needs to make decisions regarding future development, City of Poughkeepsie Mayor Rob Rolison said. The analysis will help guide his team now and also be part of the legacy he leaves to those who follow him in office.
