Watertown City Council makes no decision on vacant seat

WATERTOWN — With a seat remaining unfilled, candidates are beginning to line up to run for City Council in next November’s election. At least seven candidates have expressed interest in three council seats that will come up in November. They could start circulating petitions Tuesday. On Monday night, the current council could not agree to appoint either Amy Horton or Benjamin Shoen to fill the vacant seat created by the recent resignation of former Councilman Jesse C.P. Roshia. As was expected, the votes for Mrs. Horton and Mr. Shoen ended in a 2-2 stalemate, with Mayor Jeffrey M. Smith and Councilwoman Sarah V. Compo voting yes. The appointments needed three votes.

Watertown Councilwoman Ruggiero running again, Henry-Wilkinson is not

WATERTOWN — While a seat remains vacant on City Council, Councilwoman Lisa A. Ruggiero has announced she’s seeking a second term and Councilman Ryan Henry-Wilkinson won’t run for re-election. Councilwoman Ruggiero, who’s in her fourth year on the council, announced her re-election bid in a press release Wednesday morning. While he’s been thinking about his decision for about a year, Councilman Henry-Wilkinson said he thought it was the right time for the announcement that he’s not seeking re-election because his plans to stay out of November’s council race might spur more interest from potential candidates to fill the vacant council seat.

Watertown City Council unable to name replacement for Roshia

WATERTOWN — City Council members were unable to fill a vacant council seat after interviewing two candidates Saturday. Mayor Jeffrey M. Smith said they came away needing some time to think about what to do after interviewing Amy Horton and Benjamin Shoen during an executive session Saturday. No decision was made, he and council members said. “They wanted some time and then we’ll circle back,” he said. Mayor Smith said he planned to get back to council members in the middle or end of the week to get their thoughts about filling the seat left vacant by former Councilman Jesse C.P. Roshia, who resigned last month.
