Big yield potential for 2021 as Ohio s Corn Warriors take to the fields – Ohio Ag Net

By Matt Reese The weather was just not cooperating for planting in 2020. It was time to start filming Season 4 of the reality show  Corn Warriors and Greene County farmer Cory Atley was preparing for potential failure on national television.  Corn Warriors airs on RFD TV and features six farmers from around the country trying to grow record-setting corn yields. Atley (nicknamed “Beast” on the show) farms more than 8,000 acres of leased and family ground and has won the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) yield contest for Ohio numerous times.  “I was nervous. I thought the first year being on  Corn Warriors was going to be a complete flop. The weather just did not work with us. We were wet early and we planted until June 15, which is not common for us. The biggest chunk of the corn acres went in the last week of May and beans were planted after that,” Atley said. “Then we turned hot and dry. We could not buy a rain. With the products and the hybrids we have

Shape up soybean yields

Farmers traditionally have gone gangbusters growing corn. Soybeans? Well, not so much. Cory Atley has harvested bumper corn yields in recent years. In fact, he’s won the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) corn yield contest for Ohio each of the past four years. He applies the strategy behind his corn yields – such as 2020’s conventional non-irrigated 320 bushels per acre – to soybeans.  It’s not easy. “Growing 100-bushel [per acre] soybeans is a lot harder than growing 300-bushel [per acre] corn,” he says. “There are a lot more people to network with in corn, lots more styles and strategies than there are with beans. There is also a lot more trial and error – a lot more failures to get to the point where you want to be.”

Advanced Yield Select Crop Inputs seeks to boost ROI

It is all about the return on investment. Cory Atley, Ohio’s four-time crop production yield winner, announced a new brand Advanced Yield Select Crop Inputs for the purpose of helping growers “make the most of every dollar they spend on crop inputs on every acre they farm.” Atley, who farms more than 8,000 acres of leased and family ground, is known by many for his high yields and appearance in the reality show “Corn Warriors.” In addition to farming, he and his team at Advanced Yield work with dozens of farmers from Ohio to Kansas to coax more bushels from the ground every year.

NCGA releases Yield Contest results

U.S. farmers not only planted and harvested a large crop successfully in 2020, but they also rolled out some impressive yields in the National Corn Growers Association’s National Corn Yield Contest despite weather challenges, wildfires, and a pandemic. Don Stall, Charlotte, Michigan, produced the highest yield in the contest with a yield of 476.9052 bushels per acre, reflecting farmers’ resilience and the value of modern seed varieties, advanced production techniques and innovative growing practices. The National Corn Yield Contest is now in its 56 th year and remains NCGA’s most popular program for members. “This contest brings farmers together to create, innovate and explore ways to optimize the nation’s largest and arguably most important crop,” said Debbie Borg, chair of NCGA’s Member and Consumer Engagement Action Team. “At both the state and national levels, contest winners find new ways to excel while using a variety of techniques. Ultimately, the invention
