India on Monday reported 2,09,918 new Covid-19 cases and the number of deaths reported during this period reached 959. The total fatalities in the country has reached 4,95,050. A Danish study has found that the BA.2 subvariant of the Omicron variant, which has quickly taken over in Denmark, is more transmissible than the more common BA.1 and more able to infect vaccinated people. Worldwide, the "original" BA.1 subvariant accounts for more than 98 per cent of Omicron cases, but its close cousin BA.2 has quickly become the dominant strain in Denmark, dethroning BA.1 in the second week of January. Meanwhile, the online space was set ablaze with chatter around 'NeoCoV' last week. By late Friday (January 28), 'NeoCoV' was the top search term in India with more than five lakh searches, according to Google. Stay tuned for LIVE updates.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), over 21 million new coronavirus cases were reported around the world last week, representing the highest number of weekly cases recorded since the start of the pandemic. India’s Covid-19 tally also remained below 3 lakh at 2,86,994 for the third consecutive day on Wednesday. Deaths, however, crossed the 500-mark for the second day in a row. The global health body emphasised that Omicron continues to be a dominant variant due to its significant growth advantage, higher secondary attack rate and observed reproduction numbers as compared to the Delta variant.
Finally, after breaking a five-day streak of reporting over three lakh daily Covid cases, India on Tuesday registered 2,55,874 new infections. The International Monetary Fund's chief economist Gita Gopinath on Tuesday said that as the pandemic enters its third year, the continuing global recovery faces multiple challenges. The Omicron variant has moved the Covid-19 pandemic into a new phase and could bring it to an end in Europe, WHO Europe director Hans Kluge has said, However, experts have said that new subvariant, BA.2, is now replacing the original Omicron in India and could be more infectious.
