Party for Cornwall Mebyon Kernow marks 70 year anniversary

On that day Mebyon Kernow (MK) was born and over the last seven decades the party has continued to fight for Cornwall and its people. Dick Cole, leader of MK and figurehead of the party for more than 30 years, said that the party grew from a renewed interest in Cornish culture which has continued to this day. “It is fair to say that there was a renaissance of Cornish culture and identity in the early 20th century. In the 1920s the Old Cornish Society and Gorsedh were set up and there were groups like Tyr ha Tavas being set up.

Cornwall elections delay fear over of Covid

And Cornwall councillors seem to be split on whether polling day should be postponed. Several elections are due to be held in May including for all seats at Cornwall Council, the Police and Crime Commissioner elections which were postponed last May, and multiple town and parish council elections. Several areas in Cornwall are also waiting to hold referendums on Neighbourhood Development Plans which have been put on hold due to the pandemic. Earlier this week local authorities in Manchester called for local elections to be pushed back to the autumn. However the Cabinet Office has said that preparations for elections to be held in May will continue.

Helston town plaque for clerk Chris Dawson leaving for Portugal

After 16 years overseeing the daily life of Helston town clerk Chris Dawson has retired - but not before he was awarded one of the highest honours the council can give. A virtual celebration was held last Wednesday, with councillors and members of the public joining online to wish Chris well for the future. At the Guildhall he was joined by deputy town clerk Pamela Lavelle, who will be taking over the top job in the new year, deputy mayor Tim Grattan-Kane and mayor John Martin for a socially distanced small gathering, held before Tier 2 restrictions came in.
