I had already covered the indianapolis 500 where i had been the only woman in the country. I found this interesting because it was a magic place to work. Styleradley hired me for and it really transformed and revolutionized the paper business. It is not at all like it was then. You would do 2000word pieces and people would read them. That business of not being able to go into the press box to itand file my copy struck home and read smith, the great columnist wrote aps saying, isnt it time we change some of these rules . I felt it was a bit of moving on up for women. What excuse did they give . Because i was a woman. They just didnt have women in the press box. They just to say that if a woman was on a ship, it was bad news for the ship. I have no idea, but they just banned them. There were a lot of
To go for you, which created tremendous conflicts. A lot of argument on different sides of the issue. One of the things people sometimes say is what youre saying of course is probably true. But it is much more true for the enlisted soldiers than the officers, which does disproportionately draw from the middle class. Staffas mercenaries. They gained their freedom. That really did have some bad affects in china, no doubt about that. Really complicated issues. As you can probably tell, the way i am rambling around, its one i have not thought about enough. Good morning. Hows everyone . Good, good, good. All right. So last time we were talking about the postcivil war south. 1865 to 1900 and the postcivil war west, that same time frame. Todays topic is called the gilded age. Roughly again, postcivil war up to 1900. But this lecture is really about america becoming an Industrial Power industrialization is going to be the key to understanding whats going on in the postcivil war north. Okay, ill explain the title gilded age in a few minutes because it has roots here in our own state of missouri. But to talk about america becoming an Industrial Power, there are certain sets of conditions that we need for that process to occur. For example, if youre going to become an Industrial Power, you need to have an abundance of Mineral Resources. Coal. Iron ore. Copper, tin, zinc. All kinds of things such as that. And whats fortunate for the United States is that we are blessed with all of those materials in our own country. Weve got huge pockets of coal
