More Harm Than Good : Council Calls For Government Rethink On Māori Wards

Forcing councils to hold a referendum on their decisions to introduce Māori wards will create division and needless cost for ratepayers, says a district mayor.

Education and publicity could be key to reversing abysmal voter turnout

Janine Rankin/Stuff The turnout in Palmerston North s by-election was only 27 per cent, but that was nearly double that for Rangitīkei’s southern ward. Candidates in two local body by-elections plagued by low voter turnout say educating people about the importance of councils and increasing publicity about voting could help stop the rot. By-elections were held in Rangitīkei’s southern ward and Palmerston North in February, and each attracted few voters. In the Rangitīkei ward, just 447 votes were cast, a turnout of 15.1 per cent, which could be a New Zealand record low. The by-election cost the council $23,045, so it spent $51.55 for each vote, where Coral Raukawa won a two-horse race.

Concerns aired over need for changing room in Bulls Community Centre

Users also complained about the venue being smaller than the old town hall and the kitchen being “a bit small for catering”. Last November, councilwoman Jane Dunn resigned from the Rangitīkei District Council in protest over the council s refusal to immediately install changing rooms. The council opted instead to push the discussion to a February meeting once feedback could be gathered. At this meeting, the council did not feel prepared to make a decision and delayed the discussion until March. The centre was designed for all rooms to be multipurpose, so any room in the building could be used to change in.
