Forest Service’s prescribed fire in Iosco County fire no longer spreading, officials say Updated Apr 24, 2021; Facebook Share IOSCO COUNTY, MI A prescribed U.S. Forest Service fire in Iosco County that grew out of control has stopped spreading, officials confirmed. “Forward growth of the fire has been stopped,” said Josh Veal, public affairs officer for the Huron-Manistee National Forests, at about 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 24. “The spread has stopped and our firefighters have been working really hard all night and today too. We’re working to extinguish hot spots along the edges and we’re making good progress.”

Containment of U.S. Forest Service’s prescribed fire in Iosco County continues to improve Updated 12:14 PM; IOSCO COUNTY, MI - Containment of an Iosco County fire continues to improve as of Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Since Friday afternoon firefighters have worked to contain the “Brittle Fire,” a prescribed fire operation that spread out of control and caused temporary evacuations of about 65 area residents. The Brittle Fire is in Iosco County on the Huron Shores Ranger District of the Huron-Manistee National Forests. The fire, north of Sand Lake and just south of Cooke Dam Pond, was about 30% contained Saturday and is about 40% contained as of late Sunday morning.

Forest Service controlled burn becomes uncontained, forces evacuations

A controlled burn in northern lower Michigan has grown into a wildfire that has affected nearly 6,000 acres and forced evacuations in multiple communities, state police said. Officials with the U.S. Forest Service, who started what was supposed to be a controlled burn, remained on the scene alongside multiple agencies past 9 p.m., said Joshua Veal, public affairs officer for the Huron-Manistee National Forests, where the fire originated.  Multiple aircraft, including tankers, also were involved in the efforts, he added.  We re working really hard on our side to catch it and get it suppressed. There were no immediate reports of injuries or structures lost, he said. It wasn t immediately clear how many people had been evacuated.
