Northern Michigan forest fire 80% contained
OSCODA A northern Michigan forest fire that has consumed close to 5,000 acres is 80 percent contained, the U.S. Forest Service said.
The so-called Brittle Fire began as a prescribed burn in Iosco County, but a sudden wind blew the fire outside its boundaries, according to Joshua M. Veal, public affairs officer with the Forest Service. During the course of firing operations, a wind event that was not forecasted occurred, which caused the prescribed fire project to move outside of the containment lines resulting in a declared wildfire, he said. On scene resources engaged in suppression efforts immediately to contain the spot fire but were unsuccessful as the fire consumed nearly 4,695 acres outside of the intended area.
