out of a belief that he did this and he needed to resign. paul, is it easier for democrats to do this with franken and conyers because those seats are not going to be taken over by republicans, whereas the roy moore seat could go to a democrat? no. because the next time it could be a state where a republican governor is. a republican could win this special election quite easily. minnesota is a democrat state, but it s not unheard of for republicans to win there, or independents like jesse ventura, who sort of trumped before trump. that s an insult to governor ventura, but sort of an independent outsider. but kirsten made a point before we came on, in the greenroom, about how it s more important for the democrats not just morally but politically. democrats are the party of women. so i went back and looked. the last seven presidential elections, seven, democrats won the women s vote every single time. seven out of seven for 25 years. they ve never lost women. you know how many times
disclosure? that s the next thing. elizabeth, do you think the next step in terms of democrats and their thinking to the extent there s a strategy is to line up against donald trump, against the president of the united states? they re now set themselves up where al franken is off the map. john conyers is off the map. are they preparing themselves now, if they were willing to get up in great numbers against al franken, why not do so for the president? that s what s going to happen in 2020, next year, and, again, there could be a backlash. i can hear one already on the show this morning. there could be a backlash with voters but i also the calculation is a lot of women will turn out. we ve seen that with our reporting that there are vast numbers of women lining up to run in 2018 to get involved in politics. that s the bet. that this will mobilize large
today making this point and others have about the asymmetry that appeared to be developing. democrats say we take this seriously and you had conyers and franken. these are two very large figures in the democratic party, both resigning in the same week, while blake farenthold hangs out in congress, roy moore runs, donald trump is president. trent franks resignation today seemed to complicate the picture a little bit, that it wasn t going to just be that one party was going to deal with this and the other party was like, all right. well, i m hopeful that that s the case. one thing that i want to say about today is that democrats need to make this counting. like if we are going to call our ranks. if this is the principle that we are setting today, we need to replace these guys with bold, progressive women and we need to hold the other side to the same principle. we have to talk about the fact that it s been 425 days since donald trump admitted to being a sexual predator, and he s still
conversation. and i thought it was really important in his speech that he talked about what s going on on the other side of the aisle. a lot of there was a lot of there was a piece about today making this point and others have about the asymmetry that appeared to be developing. democrats say we take this seriously and you had conyers and franken. these are two very large figures in the democratic party, both resigning in the same week, while blake farenthold hangs out in congress, roy moore runs, donald trump is president. trent franks resignation today seemed to complicate the picture a little bit, that it wasn t going to just be that one party was going to deal with this and the other party was like, all right. well, i m hopeful that that s the case. one thing that i want to say about today is that democrats need to make this counting. like if we are going to call our ranks. if this is the principle that we are setting today, we need to replace these guys with bold, progress
listen, moore is going to have his judgment day. it s going to be next tuesday. you re right, it is a national issue. it s an issue that each month we hear more information. we still have those secret settlements that took place those members of congress that did those secret settlements. that s going to come out. i think the more information that comes out is a good process. but how you deal with moore, you know, the more the national media, and the national people get involved in this race, they re emboldening the alabama voter to vote yes for moore. so i think we have to be careful. we sort of misplayed our hand early on on how to deal with this. i think mcconnell sort of spent too much money where it became a negative and allowed moore to elevate himself beyond all these attacks. now, you know, the voters of alabama are going to have their say, and it s probably going to grotesque a lot of the rest of the voters in the country. i m looking at this on several issues. this is a
