The false guise of an arrest. The chair of the inquiry into his conduct and background, says without a radical overhaul of Police Vetting and recruitment, theres nothing to stop another couzens operating in plain sight. June kelly reports. He was a predatory sex offender in a police uniform. A criminal with state sanctioned powers. Wayne couzens should never have been allowed to become a police officer, and Continualflawed Vetting meant he was able to stay in his role despite a series of red flags. These are among the stark conclusions of todays inquiry report into couzens. It examined his career, his behaviour and the way he was vetted. The metropolitan Police Service told the inquiry in 2022 that it still have recruited him if provided with the same information. I found this astonishing. Now is the time for change. Without a significant overhaul, there is nothing to stop another Wayne Couzens operating in plain sight. The report described how in 2004 and 2008, kent police turned down
whole world on a nerve s edge? yevgeny prigozhin out of sight. this is the last-known image of the wagner leader fleeing, striking a deal to go to belarus after leading an armed rebellion over the weekend. but is there a deal really? what does it say about his motive in that new audio recording? plus, the kremlin scrambling pro project control, releasing new video of vladimir putin today. we hadn t seen him in more than 48 hours since releasing a short statement during the most dramatic challenge to his power in decades. his whereabouts officially are still unknown since we don t know exactly when or where the video was recorded. president biden, though, making it clear in the last hour putin can t point fingers at his enemies. he gave no excuse to blame this on the west or blame this on nato. we made clear that we were not involved, we had nothing to do with it. this is part of a struggle within russia s system. in about 15 minutes we ll hear from the u.s. state departme
hello and welcome to a special president s edition of inside politics. i m abby phillip in for john king in washington. president biden surprises the world with a trip to kyiv. russia s aim was to wipe ukraine off the map. putin s war of conquest is failing. plus, former president jimmy carter is now at home receiving hospice care in a small georgia town where he spent most of his life. and can ron desantis muzzle the media? the presumptive 2024 candidate makes his case to overturn a decades old supreme court decision and strip away protections for the free press. but up first, a truly unprecedented trip happening now in ukraine just hours ago the president visited an active war zone and today joe biden has put solidarity ahead of his own personal safety. [ air raid sirens ] he arrived in kyiv this morning, greeted by those air raid siren. the trek to ukraine s capital is timed nearly to the one-year mark of russia s invasion. the visit comes with a $500 million pr
i think it s worth keeping in mind that what we ve seen the last 72 hours is not the kind of thing that occurs in annual army that believes it s on a path to victory. it exposes not only the fragility of putin s control, but also what s going on inside the military. if the report of shoigu being still on the job as defense minister is accurate, that clearly demonstrates that putin values loyalty over competence. in any other place, a guy like shoigu with all the vague yours in the production, the fact that he couldn t even stop a 400-vehicle convoy driving through russia two days ago, that level of incompetence is a good thing for ukraine. prigozhin i saw the tweet that senator warner was referencing, but you don t know if that s somebody being sarcastic as often happens on social media. but lukashenko seems to me to be
in ukraine? reporter: well, first of all, abby, with surprise. no one saw this coming. not those of us in the press and certainly not the residents of kyiv. we did have some indication early this morning that something significant was in the works with security measures that we hadn t really seen before. and then video started popping up on social media of that huge security footprint, as it s called, of the president s convoy driving around kyiv. and then in late morning, we saw the two presidents you can see that shot right there they re walking across st. michael s square, which is just behind me, out in front of st. michael s church. and there they went inside and they laid wreaths in tribute to the ukrainian soldiers who have fallen in this conflict. abby, it s fair to say that this trip was received very positively. everyone we have spoken with has been very happy to see president biden here in kyiv.
