When the pandemic forced schools to close their doors almost a year ago, families and districts scrambled. There was the rush to shift to online learning, a massive, underfunded task that immediately revealed the scope of the country’s digital divide. There was heightened concern over child abuse, as kids lost access to not only a daily reprieve from violent homes but also a critical support network. And then, as the public health crisis became an economic crisis, there was widespread hunger especially among kids.

Armed police seized 100 weapons from one house after they were called to a large scale street battle between rival gangs.
Officers were called to the residential street in Jarrow, South Tyneside, after groups of men clashed with baseball bats, knives and an imitation firearm while frightened members of the public called 999.
No one was injured in the disturbance, which unfolded in June last year, but CCTV footage showed the men carrying a range of weapons as they fought on the street.

THE new Tier 4 restrictions are not enough to help curb the rise in Covid cases in Swindon, Adver readers say.
