it had nothing to do to come close to any kind of an allegation. it was repeated something that had been in the newspaper the day before. the newspaper article was in the october 7, 2009, edition of the hornell evening tribune. in a profile of congressman massa, the tribune reported he was living in a rowhouse with five staffers. according to the washington post it was massa s chief of staff informed pelosi s office of his living situation. joining me now is msnbc political analyst richard wolffe. richard, how much of a problem could this ethics committee investigation be for democrats? well, judging from what we ve seen in the public reports that is an important caveat, we don t know what we don t know, carry on quoting rumsfeld, stuff happens. the question is how do the democrats react to this stuff. the investigation as best we can tell is really going to focus on this timeline which actually puts the democratic leadership

that eric massa s resignation would be enough. it wasn t because there was some confusion about when did democratic officials know of some kind of problem happening in the office of the former new york congressman? so how does the story go? well, there have been questions about what did the speaker know? now, senior aides to the speaker say their office was given some information back in october, but not rising to the level of these sexual harassment allegations, it was really of a different tone. they said they were warned by one of massa s staffers at the time that the congressman had too many staffers, had been living with some of his staffers, and there were concerns about foul language. so today the speaker said that she did not know about the sexual harassment allegations until very late in the game. and so she is contending that she and her office were not aware for months. republicans raised that question. of course, the obvious implication is that they might have been hiding i
staffers in your office, member services director a staffer. a staffer in your office. but it was not something that your staff believed rose to the level of an there are all kinds of articles written about many members in the congress. i don t think we want to get to a place besides, i served on the ethics committee for seven years. when i say served it was almost like a sentence. it is very tough duty and i commend the people who serve there and the service they provide to the congress, but the last thing we would have wanted was any intervention from the speaker s office. there is an appropriate way for an allegation to be sent to the ethics committee, and it shouldn t be something that is the speaker s office is the melting or the mixing pot. are you troubled, though, now congressman massa s behavior since around the time
