party. i m really going to concentrate on the local part of the race. i feel that our district has been woefully under served for many, many years, first with congressman crowley and now with congresswoman ocasio-cortez. she s done an excellent job creating a national profile but i really don t think she s concerned about what s going on in the district. i think i have a real feel for what s going on in the district and my job as a teacher has a lot to do that. mike: noting ocasio-cortez s 2018 republican opponent anthony pappas won just 14% of the vote, so, robert, what 2020 for different? you have to put this in historical context. since 1927 the district has been firmly democratic except for guy molinari in 1983 and his wife who succeeded him that in 1993. the district which is 49-50% hispanic. this is the exact demographic of alexandria ocasio-cortez. if a republican wants to win
defeating long island long term new york congressman joe crowley. a lot of people thought he would be the next speaker. next guest is a bronx resident who says the one-time bartender inspired him to run against her for the 14th house district seat. joining us now is high school government teacher and former police officer john cummings. john, why are you in. there are several reasons. one of the reasons i got in was at the prompting of my students. for a long time they asked me, you know, mr. cummings why don t you run my answer is i think it s impossible to defeat an incumbent so firmly entrenched like congressman crowley was. and the present congresswoman ocasio-cortez obviously ruined that excuse for me as my students pointed out to me. it was pretty lame. it s not easy. certainly going to be uphill battle. there is great organization. mike does a great job up there organizing the bronx g.o.p. and certainly queens is 65% of the district and they are well organized. i think we can
have told someone to center their entire campaign around immigration. the president did that. and then he won states we haven t won in decades. there is this idea that the president says he doesn t trust polling, especially this early and as a result he will go down to orlando and do his thing, which will be talking about immigrants, talking about the economy, but much about the fact that he s someone who has been under attack and the fake news media and all these people don t like him. joe crowley, question to you about the democrats. we re talking about trump earlier. now on the democrats. elizabeth warren showing strength in the new south carolina primary poll, joe biden leading with 37% of the vote. elizabeth warren is apparently surging there at 17%. you ve got mayor pete also now in double digits. how much of a comfort is this poll to the biden campaign, do you think, with this debate, this first debate, what, nine days away? i certainly think elizabeth warren is surging. i t
poll shows support surging for elizabeth warren there. in all the bad polling for president trump, you can tell his supporters are watching closely that biden is bleeding support to elizabeth warren. that s the only good news that they have. it s not good news for biden and congressman crowley is right. the nominee goes to the person who wins the african-american majority support. biden has that. in a big, crowded field he has very strong numbers. that s what he still has. what elizabeth warren is doing is showing people she really wants this job. so she s really expressing this hunger that people in small settings in her campaign appearances are responding to. she doesn t just want to be president. she wants to do president. i don t know that president trump wanted to. i think he wanted to, you know, win. but there are days when he doesn t act like he wants to do the job. maybe joe biden is not showing up enough on the campaign trail. her intensity about wanting to actually be presi
