New Delhi, Jan 22 : History was made at the US presidential inauguration last night and it wasn t just about an outgoing President not attending the ceremony for the first time in 152 years. As Hsiao Bi-khim entered the Capitol building, Taiwan was represented in an official capacity at the US presidential inauguration for the first time since 1979, the year which saw a break in diplomatic relations between Washington and Taipei. Honoured to represent the people and government of Taiwan here at the inauguration of President Biden and Vice President Harris. Democracy is our common language and freedom is our common objective. I look forward to working with the next US administration in advancing our common values and interests, Hsiao said in a video message posted on Twitter while standing in front of the West Front.

Former President Donald Trump broke precedent and refused to concede and attend the inauguration of Biden and Harris; however, former Vice President Mike Pence was in attendance. The 59th Inauguration Ceremony was opened by Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who spoke of the recent breach of Capitol Hill and passing the torch of democracy. Klobuchar said the celebration of a new president and the first African American and Asian American woman vice president would ârestore the soul of America.

While many presidents have used Bibles for their inaugurations, the Constitution does not require the use of a specific text and specifies only the wording of presidentâs oath. That wording also doesnât include the phrase âso help me God,â but every modern president has appended it to their oaths and most have chosen symbolically resonant Bibles for their inaugurations.
