the american public knows that once that runs out, they may be headed they be running into a brick wall. martha: well, certainly we ve never seen anything like may of 2021 when the u.s. savings rate went to 23%. americans don t save a third of every dollar. that s been sitting in the pipeline. they re going through it, no question. if you look at the confidence numbers, they don t actually look that bad for the current conditions. you ask charles: expectations though. they re concern about the outlook. charles: expectations versus current conditions are at the biggest gap since 2000. i think the american public is brilliant, doug. they know things before the folks in the ivory towers on wall street and the folks on d.c. so play it out for us. i think the federal reserve is meeting season. everybody thinks they re going to hike rakes again. feels like a difficult like we re living on borrowed time. well, you know, i don t have a great news story for you here.

number, he was like, look, if we re headed for recession, the american consumer doesn t know it. they say they feel lousy about the economy, but they keep spending and they re spending on experiences, getting raises, job hopping. so there s what we feel about the economy and what the numbers are actually showing. there s over at the chamber of commerce they call it secondhand pessimism. the economy is stronger than the headlines reveal. what do you say about that? i think that absolutely makes sense. i think when these confidence numbers come out, consumer confidence, it looks very low on the surface. consumers say they don t feel good about the economy but i think a stage you have to look at, it s a core confidence indicator. the first thing you do is go to the job expectations and wage expectations indexes. those look very different from the rest of the confidence numbers. people will tell you they feel very bad about this economy and
