devastated. here we go. citywide power outage. we re going to interrupt this event. i m very sad. and it actually has rescheduled that show for monday. let s get right out to alexandra field. you just heard from officials. what are they saying? reporter: hey there, ana. con-ed regrets the disruption. five hours in the dark. the power outage affecting some 40 blocks in manhattan on the west side. but they are saying it will take months to figure out exactly what went wrong as they take a look at what malfunctioned. they are ensuring there are redundancy in the system to prevent something like this from happening again in the next few days with the temperature expected to tick upward. what we know is there was a problem at a substation in midtown that affected five other substations which plunged so many people into the darkness. con-edson says they can rule out
the reports from the mta, the transportation department and they re saying several new york city subway stations are shut down right now. you might think that s the weekend, that s normal. mta has issues. no, they re shut down because of the electrical problems they re having. new york fire department, police department, con edson, the local utility company, right now they re not saying what has caused this blackout. as we ve been speaking, that number of people who are impacted has gone up. and i do expect it to continue to go up because seems to be a lot of customers from midtown to the upper west side. we have video from outside if you want to see it from what folks are seeing. at the moment there s our sign. fud that sign is never off, if you will. this is what has been affecting
efforts to contain the fire and then in the coming hours to finally put the fire out. there was no warning. now, i would like to emphasize, everything i m telling you is based on preliminary information. this is the best information we have at this moment and is by definition preliminary. but from what we know now, the only indication of danger came about 15 minutes earlier when a gas leak was reported to con edson. con ed dispatched a team immediately to respond. the explosion occurred before that team could arrive. as soon as the explosion was called in, fdny responded literally within two manipulations minutes of the call for help. fdny is now, again, in the process of put souting out the . con ed is in the process of shutting down all gas mains
