In 1994, Americans were presented with A Contract with America from Republican Leaders Newt Gingrich and Dick Armey. This policy document was a set of proposals inspired by President Ronald Reagan s 1985 State of the Union speech.. The contract was a detailed document of specific policies and actions that Republicans would advance if they took over the majority of the US House of Representatives. Many of these proposals made their way into actual laws.

But then, as the notorious boxer Mike Tyson once said: “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” The former heavyweight champ had it right. In the immigration debate, the best-laid plans get sidetracked by harsh realities. President Joe Biden is getting creamed by reality. In a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll, 53 percent of respondents disapproved of Biden’s handling of the surge in Central American migrants at the U.S. Mexico border. Only 37 percent approved.

Police reform bill facing hurdles to passage in U S Senate

In an update to last week’s Black Press USA op-ed on the George Floyd Justice in Police Act, the federal police reform bill was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives late Wednesday and now goes to the Senate, where it faces stiffer opposition. The bill is the most ambitious effort in decades to overhaul policing nationwide. Moderate Democrats fear it will reignite a debate they say hurt them during last fall’s elections. “No one ran on ‘defund the police,’ but all you have to do is make that a political weapon,” said Rep. Henry Cuellar, a moderate Texas Democrat who has pushed for more police funding.
