I have the pleasure of directing the institutes reinhardt program on counterterrorism and intelligence and im very, very please to be joined here today by the acting director of the National Counterterrorism center, Russell Travers. Todays conversation is part of the institutes ongoing counterterrorism lecture series. Russell took office at nctc as acting director in august, but its not his first, second or third time in the building. In the last few hours, the Israeli Military has said that more than a million palestinians must leave the Northern Gaza Strip within the next 2a hours ahead of an expected ground operation. In response, the un spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the United Nations considers it impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences. The United Nations strongly appeals for any such order, if confirmed, to be rescinded avoiding what could transform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation. That statement has sparked an angry reaction from israel. The countrys ambassador to the United Nations said israel is trying to minimise harm to gazans.
