Studio Shamshiri gets a midcentury Hollywood Hills home ready for its close-up
French-Tunisian entrepreneur Franck Nataf enlisted designer Pamela Shamshiri to oversee a refresh of his jewel box Hollywood Hills house
Ledgewood, originally designed by Robert Kennard in 1961, opens onto a sheltered pool courtyard, remodelled by landscape design studio Terremoto
Nestled in the verdant Hollywood Hills, shaded by lush foliage and giant palms, is Ledgewood, a single-storey, modestly sized 2,298 sq ft house. The 1961 building actually has a lot to shout about: its designer and initial owner was Robert Kennard, an associate of Richard Neutra and a leading Black architect of his generation. Not grand by Hollywood standards, this handsome jewel box of a property is situated in perhaps the least inconspicuous of locations – just below the Hollywood sign.

The wood became cladding for both exterior and interior, joining soapstone, concrete, and unlacquered copper and brass all selected for their predisposition to patinate in the salt air over time. Interiors masterminded by Commune read as “polished bohemian”: intellectual but free-spirited. Pieces from George Nakashima Woodworkers and BDDW mix w

In a survey to some 100 interior designers, an overwhelming number of votes were tallied to the Eames office suite, with respondents naming the Aluminum Group chair or the Soft Pad chair its “cushioned cousin,” as manufacturer Herman Miller refers to it as their favorite desk chairs.
“There are very few desk chairs that are comfortable and good-looking,” says Frances Merrill of Reath Design, who cast her vote for the lightly padded Aluminum Group seating. The chair’s stylistic versatility must also be counted among its superpowers, insists Johanknecht, who has the Soft Pad iteration in his Los Angeles home office. “The chair is a design icon so classic that [it] mixes really well with other furnishings.”
