Kolkata: As Bangladesh held a general election on Sunday, an advocate and special public prosecutor from Kolkata was part of the 10-member Commonwealt.
Calling for a 48-hour strike starting at 6:00 am Saturday, the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has boycotted the Sunday polls amid violence.
“Looking towards and beyond the elections of 7 January, I urge leaders, candidates, and parties to actively encourage all to advance the Commonwealth values of democracy, the rule of law, and human rights in Bangladesh," Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland KC.
BNP today strongly rejected the Commonwealth secretary-general's call for a "conducive environment" in tomorrow's election, terming it a "farcical exercise" contradicting people's aspirations for democracy
