House committee moves ahead with USPS reform bill DeJoy approves

4 min read        Democrats on the House Oversight and Reform Committee are moving ahead on their latest package of postal reform legislation and picking up bipartisan support in the process. The committee will markup the 2021 Postal Service Reform Act in a meeting this Thursday.  Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) previewed her bill as a “discussion draft” at a hearing in February, and got Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s feedback on some of its key points.  Maloney, along with Ranking Member James Comer (R-Ky.), introduced the final text of the bill Tuesday afternoon, ahead of Thursday’s markup meeting.  The bill is also co-sponsored by Government Operations Chairman Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) and committee member Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-Va.).

Christopher Miller, former Acting Secretary of Defense, defends Capitol riot response at hearing

During a hearing that frequently slid into partisan sniping from both sides, Mr. Miller praised the work of the D.C. National Guard during the rioting. “The Department of Defense and our members of the armed forces performed magnificently,” he said. “I stand by every decision I made.” Democrats on the committee accused President Trump of inciting the attack on the U.S. Capitol and criticized Mr. Miller for what they said were needless delays in mobilizing National Guard troops to quell the rioting. “The world looked to the Department of Defense to protect our government from attack,” said Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney, a Democrat from New York. “Yet, the Department of Defense did not authorize the deployment of D.C. National Guard troops to the capital until nearly four hours after local officials first pleaded for help.”
