Commissioners approve eligibility rate increase for Fayette County public defender s office

Those accused of criminal offenses who can’t afford an attorney and didn’t qualify for a public defender may now qualify for help in Fayette County. The Fayette County commissioners unanimously voted on Thursday to increase the income eligibility levels for free representation through the public defender’s office. Public Defender Susan Harper said the existing income guidelines have not increased in years — so many years, in fact, that she couldn’t recall when the last increase happened. The new guidelines state a single person living alone cannot make more than $1,063 per month to qualify for a public defender; the limit prior was $767 per month.

Prison project, business park and broadband were a part of many accomplishments in 2020

Fayette County has made progress in 2020 on the new prison project, a new business park expansion and improving life in the county, according to the county commissioners. “A positive thing to us is obtaining the funding for the new prison in 2020,” said Commissioner Dave Lohr. What made funding for the project so significant was instead of getting a bond issued, the commissioners obtained a loan from the United State Department of Agriculture, with nearly 2% interest locked down on the loan. “That saved the county $25 million over the life of the loan,” said Commissioner Vincent Vicites. “That’s a tremendous savings.”
