A stakeholder task force met for the first time Tuesday to discuss concerns over a multibillion-dollar study to protect Collier County’s shorelines against storms and erosion.
The group comprises members of various communities and municipalities within the footprint of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plan, the Collier County Coastal Storm Risk Management Feasibility Study.
County Commissioner Penny Taylor chaired the stakeholder meeting and said the group’s charge is to evaluate citizen concerns and public comments and present them to an upcoming technical task force.
“Then, with the assistance of the technical advisory group of subject matter experts, create a final report to present to the Army Corps,” Taylor said. “The earliest they need it is July of 2023.”

Collier County commissioners will discuss new safety improvement plans for the Logan Boulevard extension in a meeting Tuesday.
They will be adding two median crossovers, which will allow cars to turn around more easily. The biggest issue many people have with the road is the trucks that are passing through. In order to get to the bottom of it, Collier County actually had staff follow some of the trucks to find out where the problem areas were.
They determined the trucks were coming from three locations: a Collier complex at Heritage Bay, a new charter school site near Fogg’s Nursery and Mulch Supply, and a development across from Twin Eagles. After this discovery, the county approached the trucking companies and asked if they could alter their routes. Shortly after that, the truck traffic decreased by about 3%.
