Commissioners advance illegal camping ordinance

Commissioners advance illegal camping ordinance The Leavenworth Times When they met this week, Leavenworth city commissioners advanced a proposed illegal camping ordinance that is aimed at addressing homeless encampments. Commissioners reached a consensus Tuesday to advance the proposed ordinance for a final vote. It likely will be brought before commissioners for final action in two weeks. The ordinance, if approved, would make it illegal to camp on city property or public right-of-ways. The ordinance would create an exemption for the campground at Riverfront Park. The ordinance also would allow the city manager to grant permission for camping on public property for special events.

Leavenworth mayor disputes county commissioner s comments

Members of the Leavenworth City Commission are taking exception with recent comments from a county commissioner. During a Leavenworth City Commission meeting Tuesday, Mayor Nancy Bauder discussed remarks County Commissioner Jeff Culbertson made last week. Culbertson’s remarks were made to the Lansing City Council as he discussed a proposal for a bridge project to connect Eisenhower Road in Leavenworth County with Missouri 152 Highway in Platte County, Missouri. Culbertson said he believed there was hesitancy to support the project among some Leavenworth city commissioners because they are worried about losing the Centennial Bridge and they are worried the new bridge could lead to Lansing or even Basehor outgrowing Leavenworth.

City Commission opposes health clubs property tax exemption

Leavenworth city commissioners have voiced their objection to a proposal for exempting health clubs from property taxes. “The City Commission believes that allowing one market segment to leave the property tax pool is unfair to the rest of our businesses and residents,” City Manager Kramer wrote in a letter to state legislators who represent the Leavenworth area. The letter addresses a possible amendment to a state bill dealing with property taxation. The amendment, if it were to be approved, would exempt for-profit health clubs from property taxes. Supporters for such a measure have argued it is unfair for for-profit health clubs that pay property taxes to compete against nonprofit fitness centers and city-owned facilities that are not required to pay property taxes.
