Deadly house fire under investigation in Forest Acres, SC

Columbia apartment fire determined to be accidental

The Daily Herald The fire that swept through the Columbia Meadows Apartment Complex early Tuesday morning sending three people to two different hospitals began accidentally near a living room couch inside one of the apartments, the Columbia Fire Marshall’s Office said. The determination was made by investigators with assistance from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Columbia Police Department. We have determined that the fire was accidental, said Columbia Fire and Rescue Chief Ty Cobb. We are complete with the instigation, and it has been turned over to the property owner.   The property remains gated and secured. More than a dozen of the property s residents were displaced due to the fire.

Juvenile in custody following fire at commercial building downtown

The Daily Herald A juvenile has been arrested for arson after a fire spread through a business in downtown Columbia on Wednesday. At 6:30 p.m on Wednesday, Columbia Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a large commercial building near the intersection of School Street and 11th Street. At the scene, firefighters battled an aggressive blaze as it encroached on nearby railcars, containing fuel and other hazardous materials. Columbia Fire & Rescue Chief Ty Cobb said the flames were successfully contained. “It was a very serious fire,” Cobb said. “Thankfully nobody was hurt. The situation could have become extremely dangerous. Our firefighters did an excellent job of containing the flames and keeping them from those hazardous rail cars.”
