Objection. Mr. Udall thank you, madam president. Madam president , i rise in opposition to the renomination of mr. Ajit pai to the federal Communications Commission. Mr. Pai both as f. C. C. Commissioner and now as chairman has not been a vigorous watchdog for free speech. He has not put the peoples right to information first. In fact, he has put corporate interest first. And he has opposed policies outright that ensure underserved communities have access to essential technology. I strongly oppose his renomination to the commission. Lets begin with his responsibility to guard First Amendment rights. President trump has relentlessly attacked nbc, cbs, abc, cnn, the new york times, and the washington post. He called these established and esteemed news outlets fake news. He even called them the enemy of the people. Earlier this year in february during a Senate Commerce hearing, this was an oversight hearing, i asked chairman pai point blank whether he agreed with the president that these

Joe biden i welcome everyone here this morning, judge bork, his distinguished panel of introducers, my colleagues, and the public. And i would like to take just a moment at the outset to explain how we are going to proceed today and from here on i hope. , it is the ordinary practice of the committee in a hearing like this, judge, to have Opening Statements from all of my colleagues, and then to invite the presenters of the nominee to speak, and then ask the nominee for his or her statement. But we are going to change the beginning just a little bit today to accommodate some very busy and, quite frankly, very important people. Today, you have a distinguished panel of introducers that are here, and what i would like to suggest that we do, and i have checked this with my colleagues. I believe they are all in

Current justices. We begin with the longest serving member of the court, anthony kennedy, appointed by Ronald Reagan after the failed nomination of robert pork. Confirmed unanimously in 1988, replacing and nixon appointee, Justice Lewis powell, and previoly served on the nth ciuit court of appeals. Heres a brief portion of the Justice Kennedy confirmation hearing, beginning with an introduction by robert matsui. Mr. Matsui its too bad that two individuals preceded judge kennedy for this nomination. I noticed the editorial in the New York Times this morning, they made reference to judge bork and judge ginsburg and i say its a shame because we shouldnt be here today comparing judge kennedy to his two previous nominees. Judge kennedy in and of himself is a superb candidate for the United States Supreme Court. And comparisons do not do this gentleman justice. He has a deep compassion for the law, as many of you know. Hes highly intelligent from his academic record. We can discern that. And
