MOSES LAKE The Moses Lake High School girls basketball team took an early lead, lost it, fought to overcome a second-half deficit but fell short, losing their season opener to Kennewick, 55-49 Friday..
Head Coach Matt Strophy said it had the characteristics of a first game of the year.
“Early on, they created the pace instead of us controlling the pace. So they sped us up, and we want to dictate that,” Strophy said. “I don’t mind if we go fast, but we have to want to go fast, not them make us go that way. They made us do a lot of things we didn’t want to do.”

MOSES LAKE – This year’s Moses Lake volleyball team built off the strides the 2022 squad made, qualifying for the district playoffs and finishing the year at 8-8.
“Three years ago the girls did not win a match. I can’t even remember if we won a set or two,” Trammell said on the Studio Basin podcast. “Going into last year and winning matches, taking fourth in league and missing districts by one playoff game – that still haunts us – was fantastic. They saw we can do this, that the hard work is paying off.”
MOSES LAKE While the Mavs and Rams remained tied at one through most of the second half, a late West Valley (Yakima) goal sent the Rams into the next round of the Columbia Basin Big 9 district tournament, ending Moses Lake’s season.
“We worked hard, looked like we wanted it, we just couldn’t string the passes together unfortunately,” Moses Lake coach Alysha Overland said.
After a fast start to the first half for the Mavs, West Valley tied the game in the 34th minute after a through ball got past the Maverick defense, and following a pileup in front of the Moses Lake net, was shot in past the keeper for a goal.
