COIMBATORE: Following a clash between the AIADMK and DMK cadre in Pollachi assembly constituency on March 28, the rural police on Saturday formed a special team to arrest the son of deputy speaker and the assembly constituency AIADMK candidate Pollachi V Jayaraman and a few others. A police source said that two AIADMK men were picked up by the Vadakkipalayam police and the party had pressurised police officers to release the duo. However, senior police officials clearly instructed to arrest the accused if the case was genuine. Coimbatore: A 40-year-old Trichy native has been booked under Section 12(3) of the Passport Act, 1967, for travelling to Yemen and back, despite the travel restrictions to the Gulf country. Immigration officials held Meyyappan Ganesan when he landed in the city airport from Sharjah in the early hours of Wednesday. An official said Ganesan had flown to Dubai from Trichy, making use of the travel bubble between both the countries. From Dubai, the official said, Ganesan had travelled to Yemen. He landed in the city on Wednesday morning, with a plan to travel to Trichy by road. “When we checked his passport to stamp his arrival, we noticed a Yemen travel stamp. We found he had travelled to the Gulf country and back after the lockdown began on March 23, while the travel between Yemen and India is still banned. Representative image CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu reported 2,817 fresh Covid-19 cases on Thursday, which pushed the case tally to 8.89 lakh. The death of 19 patients took the cumulative toll tally to 12,738. There were 17,043 people undergoing treatment for Covid-19. Until Thursday afternoon, 85,331 people underwent RT-PCR tests. While Chennai, the worst affected district, had 1,083 new cases, it’s neighbours Chengalpet (258), Tiruvallur (158) and Kancheepuram (115) together added 531 cases. The region reported 13 deaths. Cuddalore, Madurai, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur and Tirunelveli reported one death each. After Chennai, the highest number of cases were reported from Coimbatore. The district reported 280 deaths. In the central region, Thanjavur remained a hotspot with 113 fresh cases.

Representative image. COIMBATORE: A 40-year-old Trichy man was arrested on Wednesday for travelling to Yemen despite India banning its residents from travelling to the gulf. He was arrested in Coimbatore city under the Passport Act of 1967. The man, 40-year-old Meyyappan Ganesan reportedly travelled from Trichy to Dubai making use of the travel bubble between both the countries and from there he travelled to Yemen. He flew to Coimbatore on Wednesday early in the morning from Sharjah and planned to travel to Trichy by road. Meyyappan Ganesan landed in Coimbatore Airport via Air Arabia flight from Sharjah. When immigration official Ravi checked Meyyappan’s passport to stamp his arrival, he noticed a Yemen travel stamp.
