The Amazon Prime show “The Underground Railroad” debuted on May 14. Now streaming, the show has inspired heightened interest in this chapter of our nation s history, particularly with the cultural awakening and racial reckoning that’s been taking place in the last year.
New Jersey and South Jersey in particular played a critical role in the success of the Underground Railroad, which was, of course, not a real railroad, but a network of safe houses, safe spaces and secret routes. Abolitionists often provided shelter, food and supplies to assist runaway slaves in their pursuit of freedom.
Many have heard of Harriet Tubman, a fugitive slave who was a conductor of the Underground Railroad and made dozens of trips from South to North, leading hundreds of slaves to freedom.

Millville Police Department Chief Jody Farabella told those assembled he thinks of Patrolman Christopher Reeves every day. The 40-year old officer died July 8, 2012 when his patrol car was struck by another vehicle at 3rd and Broad streets.
They remembered New Jersey State Police Trooper Frankie Williams, assigned to the Port Norris Station. He was responding to calls of an erratic driver when his cruiser was struck by a vehicle that crossed the Route 55 median. Williams was 31 when he died Dec. 5, 2016.
Recovery driven by DDT ban, rigorous regulation and volunteer monitoring of nest sites
New Jersey’s population of bald eagles rose to a record high and spread to all 21 counties last year, according to the Department of Environmental Protection. Their revival is thanks to a federal ban on the toxic chemical DDT, long-term protections by state biologists and a network of volunteers who monitor the nests of the iconic birds.
There are now 220 nesting pairs that raised 307 young in 2020, including a record increase of 36 new nests, the DEP said last week.
Those stats represent a strong comeback after the number of eagles dropped to a single nesting pair in the late 1970s because of the toxic insecticide DDT, which made shells so thin they could not be incubated or failed to hatch for other reasons. The chemical was banned by the federal government in 1972 because of its harmful effects on wildlife, including bald eagles.

A man who was ordered to stay away from a woman he allegedly assaulted in April has been indicted on charges that he beat and choked her to death in May.
Two witnesses told police that Spann and DuBois argued in a vacant Grove Street warehouse on the night of May 21 and that the dispute turned violent.
The disagreement involved “another male,” investigators noted in Spann’s affidavit of probable cause.
The witnesses said they departed at that point and, in an interview with investigators, Spann “described himself as blacking out, beating and choking the victim until she became unconscious.”
