my most memorable interview of all time was the one that started me down this path in the first place. the very first interview i ever did was with a man known as the coed killer, a murderer so cunning, he may never have been caught had he not turned himself in. his name is ed kemper. ed kemper got the name coed killer from the newspapers because his primary victims were coeds associated with the university of california at santa cruz. - in the early 1970s, santa cruz was extremely tense. to be a woman during this time period would have been extremely scary. - it s not far from here that just a week ago today, four more bodies were discovered in a connected series of murders that now numbers at least 10. - bodies were appearing everywhere. people went missing. bodies were coming up in the ocean. - the area in and around the campus
it is 2021. everybody was together. right? coeds, college kids bringing us peanut butter and jelly in wax paper on site. and america was probably as unified as it could ever be. there was no bipartisan divide. he he just said, i m in american. i have to do this. everybody was one.

he escaped. he just wanted to get as far away from where he might be identified as he could. so he stole a car and went to florida. his new quarters are cramped. he is under 24-hour guard and he faces intense questioning. he is theodore bundy. he is jailed in florida. bundy was living in tallahassee, at the time, when five florida state university coeds were attacked on or near the campus. two of the young women died as a result of the attacks. the police in pensacola, florida, stopped a man driving a stolen car. and found, to their surprise, and perhaps pleasure, it was bundy. step out, mr. bundy. what do we have here? let s see. an indictment. all right. why don t you read it to me? mr. bundy. mr. bundy. you told me you told me you were going to get me. he said he was going to get me. okay? you got the indictment. it s all you are going to get. bundy, having had some law training and a great deal of arrogance, decided to represent
he d knock a woman to the ground and make off with one of her shoes. really creepy stuff like one crime, he wore one of those china doll masks. i mean, like creepy stuff you can t make up. reporter: the police were onto him. after one arrest, he admitted in effect, that he had a thing for ladies legs and feet. he pleaded guilty to those crimes, and in time, his attacks became more violent. he began threatening women at gunpoint. one incident involved three coeds. he had been watching them and one night, just walked into their apartment, held them at gunpoint to their head, took them out, kidnapped them to the car. luckily, somebody saw him with the gun leading the women out, called bloomington police department. reporter: he pleaded guilty again and was sentenced to 20-years in prison for armed robbery, but was released after serving only seven- years. out on parole and the defense
