we are live in the cnn newsroom, i m jim acosta in washington. it s the final days before the midterm elections, today is down to 16 if you are counting. president joe biden is planning a rare stop to stump for democrats in florida. the president has kept a relatively low profile on the campaign trail this season as his party fights to win a few crucial races in several swing states, a prominent senator was on cnn earlier this morning warning that democrats need a messaging shift. is the abortion issue important? yes. but we have also got to focus on the struggles of working people to put food on their table. i am worried about the level of voter turnout among young people and working people who will be voting democratic. and i think, again, what democrats have got to do is contrast their economic plan with the republicans. and cnn s joe johns joins me now from delaware where the president is spending his weekend. joe, you ve covered these stretches many times before, w

cast with 17 days to go until election day. at stake, control of both champ pwers of congress. the democrats have control now, but whether they can hold onto power is still in question. president biden says he s not going anywhere. at least he doesn t intend to. the reason i m not making a judgment about formally running or not running, as soon as i make that announcement, a whole series of regulations kick in and i have to treat myself as a candidate from that point on. i have not made that my formal decision, but it is my intention to run again. and we have time to make that decision. before that, his party needs to weather the midterms while acknowledging many are on shaky political ground. here s what i think. it s been back and forth with them ahead, us ahead, them ahead. pwaorlgt. and the polls have been all over the place. i think that we re going to see one more shift back to our side the closing days. part of his carefully crafted midterm strategy, tactically
in puerto rico, which was slammed by hurricane fiona nearly a week ago, there are still broken trees, roads damaged and widespread power outages. fiona continues to cause havoc. in canada, it made landfall in nova scotia at hurricane strength. homes on the coast just washed away. what can we expect? reporter: ian is expected to rapidly intensify over the upcoming days as it moves into the gulf of mexico where the environment is a little more conducive for development. we re losing that wind shear. it changes with height as it moves off to the west at 16 miles per hour. a lot more convection. a lot more organized as we are looking at satellite. as we notice a bit more of a center, we ll gain some clarity as to where this storm is expected to arrive on somewhere the coastline of florida. so currently sitting down in the caribbean, expected to take its track into the gulf of mexico by monday becoming a category 2 storm, with winds expected around 100 miles per hour. tuesday mo
