reporter: from the frenzy at kmart to a decidedly less hairy expose the best buy in colma. you made it to the front of the line. what does that take? it took getting here at noon on tuesday. reporter: that s right, noon tuesday. by the time the doors open at 5 a.m. on friday, he will have been out here 65 hours. last year w frozen. this year we re prepared. reporter: how cold did it get? like they said it got down to like the 30s. reporter: he is not alone in braving the elements in search bargains. $1,000 in total. but without the sales probably like $1,800. reporter: so pretty good? yeah. a lot of savings. reporter: would you recommend it to other people? it s not really a fun experience. but i d recommend people try it. reporter: are you crazy? how do think is going to spend the night out in 35 degrees? i am. reporter: is this any way to spend thanksgiving? this is a tradition. i have been here three or four years. it s fun. we meet new peop
reporter: this shooting happened about 8:45 this morning on sacramento between ashby and russell. let s bring in a sergeant with the berkeley pd. where does this investigation stand? we heard reports of 56 shots fired here. is that true? our detectives and investigators are on the scene as you can see trying to piece together the dynamics of this shooting. there were a lot of rounds fired, and there are a fair amount of casings still on the sidewalk behind us. reporter: there is a specific number at this point, we see 50-plus evidence markers. that doesn t necessarily mean you have 56 shell casings? no. any piece of evidence, anything that looks like it may be of evidentiary value is marked. so some are casings and some are other items that may be of interest. reporter: as for the victims, you have one deceased, a second in surgery. in terms of the people, person or persons who did this, what can you tell us about that or motive if you have one? it s really early
seen removing several yes on v signs and four no on v signs from his trunk and then hands them over to an officer. he has proclaimed that he did nothing wrong. well, he sure was acting like a criminal. reporter: oliverio says he only took signs that were placed illegally in public right of ways like these we found today at an off-ramp to highway 87. pulled down five illegal signs. i took that down as all residents are allowed by the municipal code. reporter: after this incident, the firefighters union polled its membership and the membership was overwhelmingly in favor of offering a $10,000 reward. so allen $10,000 reward is now on the table for anyone with information that leads to an arrest and prosecution of anyone tampering with or taking down no on v signs. incidentally, councilmember oliverio said that is ridiculous because he says there s a lot more crimes violent claims in san jose much more worthy of a $10,000 reward than removing signs. it says a lot abo
pipelines that cross the bay now. but they are old and in need of repair, very prone to damage. a major earthquake could put out big portions of the bay area served by the system for up to 60 days. you can imagine what your community would be going through on the tenth day let alone the 60th day. so it s vitally important. reporter: the new pipelines will range from 40 to 140 feet deep and should be able to ride out that big quake. unless you re actually at the fault itself, what normally has problems is the shaking of the ground. you always see liquifaction, hear about tressels falling over. so by going underground avoid all that. you re much safer 40 to 100 feet underground than at the surface when the whole ground is shaking. it can be scary. reporter: underground crews will have only one way in and out of tunnel but a specially built $10 million tunnel boring machine on order from japan will automate the digging and tunnel construction. when the tunnel boring
