janice dean is live for us in the extreme weather center tracking this storm. is the extreme weather center different from the regular weather center? it is hyped up. we are amped up for the storm. you know during the election time, they call tsay too close call. we don t know where it s going. we know it s going to come very close to the northeast and mid-atlantic coast line. but we don t have an exact landfall. if it s going to make landfall at all. it could actually just hug that coastline and bring hurricane force winds from cape hatteras all the way up to coastal maine so let s take a look at this storm. 5:00 a.m. advisory, they did bump it down to a category 3 but i don t want you to pay attention to that because we re still dealing with a major hurricane. it s going through some fluctuations, we could see it amp back to a category 4 storm within the next several hours. already starting to see some colder cloud tops so what that tells me is this storm is
prosecuted while other cases remain in limbo. and one person is dead, 42 hurt in a train crash in switzerland. three train cars on the glacier express came off the tracks two, flipped over. there were 210 passengers on board the train, it is the height of the tourist season. we re tracking bonnie right now, the tropical storm expected to hit the area of the gulf oil spill this weekend. but already, cleanup crews getting ready to leave are experiencing some winds and choppy waters. chris warren has the latest track. hey, chris, where s the storm right now? the storm right now is still moving over florida. you see the big mass there, you see the orange, that indicates some of the colder or the higher cloud tops and where we have the deepest convection and the strongest showers right now. the storm will be making its way back over the gulf of mexico, so back over water and what we re going to watch for is this to restrengthen most likely as we make our way tonight into tomorrow. how
getting new information that the storm has been strengthening a bit. first off you can see on our satellite perspective here is alex. notice the flare-up of thunderstorms. the brighter purples and oranges are the highest cloud tops where we have the strongest thunderstorms. this tropical storm has winds of 45 miles per hour. it s a strong tropical storm that is working its way into the yucatan now and certainly into the evening. the forecast track shows that it will likely develop to hurricane strength once it emerges again earlier this week and then possibly make second landfall in mexico or maybe the texas coast. that s under the cone of uncertainty. we ll see how much it gets broken up on the rugged terrain of the yucatan in the days and nights to come. i want to show you something more interesting. we are tracking hurricane reconnaissance aircraft as it goes through the quadrants of the storm. what you are looking at here and i will circle it. this icon is a plane.
northwest. tom saida is quote keeping a very close eye on hurricane irma. tom, what is the very latest? we have been able to kind of take a step back and look at the latest advisory. it happened all of us got to watch it together when the graphics came up. it s about what i expected. there was a western shift in that track. let s break it down. this is critical for a lot of folks here. a couple of miles here and there means everything. first of all with the infrared imagery what you want to see or not is the brighter colors, higher colder cloud tops. when you start to see more of a symmetrical look after it was interacting with the land in cuba we are starting to see strength. still at 120 miles per hour. now that the eye wall is going through an eye wall replacement cycle it s going to likely increase in strength somewhat. now it is a category 3. the national hurricane center now wants to keep it as a 3.
meteorologist raphael miranda who i saw a few minutes ago studying the latest on hurricane irma. there have been significant changes through the overnight, even right now, this is turning into an hour by hour now casting situation. irma is looking much less healthy. i ll show you how the storm is looking. you can see on the satellite picture doesn t take a trained meteorologist to understand this. when you see the reds, those are the coldest cloud tops, the more powerful thunderstorms look at them just vanishing over the past 24 hours as cuba really does a number on the strength of irma, messing with the organization. it s hard to find the eye now. we are seeing a weakening storm. this is good news. this is what we wanted, more interaction with cuba. this will be better for florida, of course cuba s expense here but looking at a weaker storm gradually moving toward florida. still a category 4. i wouldn t be surprised if we see an update to that at 11:00. maximum winds 130 miles per h
