Council leader backed to continue in role

By Aran Dhillon, Local Democracy Reporter Council leader Cllr Russ Bowden WARRINGTON Borough Council leader Cllr Russ Bowden has secured the backing required to continue in the role. Councillors passed a recommendation to appoint Cllr Bowden as leader until May 2024 during the full council meeting at the Parr Hall on Monday. It was the first in-person full council meeting in more than a year. Cllr Bowden retained his Birchwood seat in the all-out elections earlier this month as Labour retained control of the council despite losing seven seats at the Town Hall. Labour won 36 seats on the council, Tories 11, Liberal Democrats eight and independents three.

By Aran Dhillon, Local Democracy Reporter Cllr Russ Bowden WARRINGTON Borough Council leader Cllr Russ Bowden has confirmed changes to his cabinet in a post-election reshuffle. Labour retained control of the council in the all-out elections but the party lost seven seats – including three cabinet members. The party now has 36 seats at the Town Hall. The Liberal Democrats now have eight seats, after losing three, while the Tories have eleven seats after gaining 10. The independents won three seats. Judith Guthrie, portfolio holder for environment and public protection, Rebecca Knowles, portfolio holder for statutory health and adult social care, and Matt Smith, portfolio holder for children’s services, lost their seats.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the leaked messages from the Labour WhatsApp group were posted in response to a debate about flying the Union flag. Former Warrington South MP Faisal Rashid – who is standing as a candidate in the all-out elections in May – started the conversation by posting a screenshot from ITV’s Good Morning Britain, which was asking: “Should Union flags fly every day? Are flags a sign of unity and patriotism or do they divide us?”

By Aran Dhillon, Local Democracy Reporter Halton Hospital WARRINGTON’S bid for a new hospital has a ‘window of opportunity’. Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s director of strategy and partnerships, Lucy Gardner, updated Warrington Borough Council s health scrutiny committee during its virtual meeting on Thursday. One slide shown to councillors highlighted the ‘window of opportunity’ and stated ‘we find ourselves at a critical point in time’ in terms of opportunities around development and funding. Ms Gardner confirmed the vision is for the provision of hospital services in a fit for purpose estate, along with releasing land to support regeneration and ensuring interconnectivity with education and employment, as well as health and social care.
