Cllr Tony Higgins and MP Andy Carter WARRINGTON South MP Andy Carter has suggested a council cabinet member should ‘do his homework’ before making comments after launching a stinging attack. The Labour-run council has backed plans to grant LiveWire funding obtained through the national leisure recovery fund, administered by Sport England, if its bid is successful. If so, the funding will total up to £495,000. It would provide a ‘much-needed’ financial boost to support the community interest company in reopening leisure services across the borough once lockdown is lifted. But Cllr Tony Higgins, cabinet member for leisure and community, has criticised Mr Carter.
A SIX-figure refurbishment project to transform a field in Great Sankey into a green space for everyone to enjoy has been completed. Warrington Borough Council and Great Sankey Parish Council have worked together to develop the former field off Parsonage Way into a more accessible landscaped community parkland. A total of £160,000 was pumped into the project to create Vicarage Community Park, with upgrades being made to drainage and the boundary fence. An arch entrance has also been installed along with a new pathway and new seating. The park was officially opened by Cllr Tony Higgins, cabinet member for leisure and community, and he was joined by members of the local community and the parish council.

The Christmas tree in Padgate CHRISTMAS lights in Padgate have been rescued after an act of mindless vandalism. The Christmas lights on and around the tree at Padgate community garden, on Padgate Lane, were damaged and cut earlier this month. But Cllr Tony Higgins, cabinet member for leisure and community, has secured a £500 grant from the council’s community initiative fund to replace the lights and fix the damage at the site. Cllr Higgins said: “Christmas is a time of celebration and joy, this year it will be very different for so many so I’m saddened by the vandalism to the Christmas lights and damage to the garden pergola at the community garden, on Padgate Lane.
